Bad-breath stemming from a low-carb diet, is difficult to get rid of, unless you modify your eating habits. Debarati S Sen reports...
Are you a low-carb lifestyle junkie? If yes, you may have a reason to worry. This diet may give you that perfect waistline, but you will probably end up with a stinky breath! It is widely believed that low carb diets can cause ketone breath. According to a recent research more than 25 million people say that they have tried the low carb diet, and had to combat bad breath. But the flipside is that if you have bad breath you are possibly doing a good job of following your low/no-carb diet.
Dr Karishma Jaradi, dentist, explains, "When your low-carb diet burns the fat in the body it releases a chemical called ketone that are released through the breath and urine." If bad breath stems from a low-carb diet, no amount of cleaning on your part will get rid of it - and that is scary. "This kind of bad breath is not an oral hygiene problem," says dentist Dr Shantanu Jaradi, adding, "so all the brushing, flossing, and scraping of the tongue that you can do is not possibly enough to overcome this."
They suggest that it would be a good idea to reconsider your diet and then modify it if you want to avoid bad breath. Mouthwashes could mask the breath but introducing some carbohydrates in your diet will help.
However, these diets cannot be solely blamed for a bad breath say experts. Dr Jaradi says, "Even if you have a high-carb diet you can still have bad breath if you don't maintain dental hygiene. It is actually about how your body breaks down what you eat. Due to a low carb diet when the fat in the body burns, chemicals called ketones are build up in the body that cause bad breath."
Doctors say that bad breath is also caused due to gastric regurgitation, kidney problems, smoking, and bacteria. Dr Shantanu says, "If you have gum diseases, gum bleeding, infection, plaque, tartar you can have bad breath. And when these problems are sorted out you won't suffer from bad breath any more."
The bottom line is that you must reconsider the diet and modify it so this doesn't happen. There may be some ways to mask bad breath by using mouthwashes, but you can't overcome the fundamental problem other than by changing the diet - or at least introducing some carbohydrates.
Banish bad breath!
Increase your fluid intake
It helps dilute the concentration of ketones that cause bad breath. Drink several glasses of water a day to maintain proper hydration. A squeeze of raw lemon juice in water will help.
Maintain good oral hygiene
If you don't brush and floss twice a day, start immediately. Also, clean your tongue regularly.
Treat existing oral diseases
Bad breath may be caused by oral diseases such as gum disease and candida infection, so see your dentist as soon as possible.
Use natural antibiotics
Fresh parsley and aloe vera are effective in preventing bad breath. Chew fresh parsley whenever you can; it detoxifies your mouth and also contains abundant chlorophyll which sweetens your breath.
Eat crisp fruits and vegetables
Eating apples, celery, cucumber and carrot, your mouth is naturally cleaned. Plaque and food particles between your teeth and gums are removed during this process.
Switch to tea
Coffee creates a thin coat in your tongue.
Chewing sugarless gum increases natural salivation. Saliva has antibacterial properties so the more you create the more you suppress the bacterial growth. Carry fennel seeds (saunf), cinnamon sticks, chewing gum and fresh parsley along with you.
Find the exact cause and attack it
For a long-term benefit, you've got to find the exact cause of bad breath, and then attack the cause with a good remedy.
Eat the right foods
Top of the breath freshening list would be apples. It is perhaps the simplest bad breath cure when brushing isn't possible. Avoid garlic, onions, meats, fish, and cheeses.
Make your own mouthwash
Buy diluted aloe vera juice from your local pharmacy or herbal store. Add two teaspoons of it to a tumbler of water. Then gaggle your mouth with this solution.
